Combine onions with Port wine, raisins, butter, sugar 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar and 2 teaspoons thyme in a deep skillet. Cover skillet and bring to a boil over medium heat for 15 minutes.
Uncover skillet and continue cooking, stirring frequently, for 10 minute more until onions are cooked and glazed.
Remove from the heat and stir in remaining balsamic wine. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve.
Serve with meats, turkey and ham.
